January 7, 2025

A multi-vehicle collision on US-101 North near Lankershim injures one and causes traffic delays

LOS ANGELES — A three-car collision on US-101 North near South Lankershim Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon left one person injured and backed up traffic for over an hour.

The crash occurred around 2:36 p.m., just south of Lankershim Boulevard. The vehicles involved included a silver Toyota RAV4. Responders transported the driver of the Toyota to St. John’s Hospital for medical evaluation. Officials have not released further details about the person’s condition.

The Los Angeles Fire Department initially blocked two northbound lanes near Barham Boulevard as crews worked to clear the scene. Firefighters drove one vehicle off the freeway, and the Freeway Service Patrol towed another to a nearby location. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol.

Understanding Liability in Multi-Car Collisions

Multi-car accidents, such as this three-car collision on the 101 North near South Lankershim Boulevard, can present complex liability challenges. In such cases, determining the cause and apportioning responsibility often depends on multiple factors, including:

  1. Sequence of Events: Establishing which driver initiated the chain reaction—whether it was due to distracted driving, speeding, or an unsafe lane change—will be central to determining liability.
  2. Contributing Conditions: Road conditions, traffic flow, and potential external factors, such as weather or visibility, may also play a role in the accident’s cause.
  3. Shared Fault: In some multi-car collisions, fault may be distributed among multiple drivers. For example, one driver’s actions may have initiated the crash, but subsequent drivers’ responses or lack thereof may have worsened the outcome.

The involvement of the CHP and the Los Angeles Fire Department underscores the seriousness of this crash. With one driver transported to the hospital, medical documentation will also be key to evaluating the extent of injuries and potential damages.
